Abstract

The rare earth element erbium (Er) is of great interest due to Er-doped fibers providing the basis for optical amplifiers in the 1.55 µm spectral region, a low-loss and low dispersion region for optical fibers. Er-doped semiconductors1 are also attractive as compact sources of 1.55 µm radiation and as optical amplifiers.
