Multiphoton processes and atomic motion in laser light

Abstract

We discuss the role of multiphoton processes in laser manipulation of atoms. Light shifts and optical pumping allow deep cooling and localization of multilevel atoms. Higher-order multiphoton transitions modify the lightforce on multilevel atoms.
