Irregular QAM Formats for Short-Reach Amplifier-Less Coherent Optical Systems

Abstract

A low-complexity scheme is proposed to realize irregular QAM formats in amplifier-less coherent optical systems. The simulation results show 36QAM and 49QAM achieve 2.32 dB and 1.9 dB gains of power budget over 64QAM at net bit rates of 650 Gbit/s and 750 Gbit/s, respectively.
