Stereoscopic visualization of real-time intraoperative four-dimensional optical coherence tomography in ophthalmology

Abstract

Four-dimensional microscope integrated optical coherence tomography (4D-miOCT) has been proposed as an alternative to conventional white-light microscopy during ophthalmic surgical interventions [1,2]. Due to its real-time visualization capability of 3D data, it constitutes one of the most promising visualization techniques for many surgical use cases in ophthalmology [3]. However, defining the optimum way of presenting 4D-miOCT data is an open research question. Past investigations have included display screens of the rendered scenes [4], virtual and augmented reality approaches [5], as well as superimposition of the images through the oculars. In this work, we conducted a comprehensive user study for optimal visualization with the highest performance use of the 4D-miOCT data, comparing an autostereoscopic light field tablet to a 3D TV. We compared the subjective visual impressions and easiness of use for the study participants, as well as the impact on the influence on the convenience for mock surgical maneuvers via quantitative measures for each task and presentation of visualization.
