Abstract
Several types of detectors are now in use for ultraviolet and optical observations from space. Future instruments for the 100 - 10,000 Å wavelength region will require detectors with greater quantum efficiency, smaller picture elements, larger wavelength range, and a larger active area than are currently available. Two-dimensional detectors are now being developed to meet these requirements. Efficient use of such detectors will require improvements in support electronics, and new ways to handle the enormous amounts of data generated.
