Abstract
To measure simultaneously the range and velocity of solid targets, a pulsed heterodyne detection technique can be used. An advantage of heterodyne detection over direct detection is that the signal-to-noise ratio is higher in heterodyne than in direct detection. Measured values of the heterodyne-to-direct advantage are between 100 and 150, although theoretical values are much higher.
