Abstract
The reliability of airborne laser systems using coherent CW C02 lasers has progressed to nearly operational status during the last five years. The Atmospheric Technology Division at the National Center for Atmospheric Reserach (NCAR) has an interest in supplementing and providing an alternative to its present gust probe air motion sensors (velocity and turbulence) on board its research aircraft. A future aircraft will probably serve as an airborne platform for remote sensor systems, such as a Doppler radar and a laser radar system in addition to the standard airborne in-situ sensors.
