Long-distance Pulse Propagation of 50 Uncoupled Fiber Modes due to Topological Confinement

Abstract

We demonstrate unmixed pulse propagation of 50 modes over ~0.5km of a fiber with average mode purity ~18dB and loss ~4dB/km exploiting a phenomenon where light guides due to topological confinement rather than total internal reflection.
