Abstract
We have discovered a new thermodynamic noise unique to crystalline materials that will limit their performance in optical metrology. It causes frequency-dependent depolarization of the optical field, which appears as apparent amplitude and phase noise when the field is detected. Our work generalizes all prior descriptions of thermo-optic noises in amorphous materials.
