Abstract
Nonlinear optics involves the study of coherent interactions between multiple optical waves. In its most general manifestation, a nonlinear process must satisfy momentum conservation, or equivalently, phase or wavevector matching, which translates into a dispersion engineering problem in optical fibers. Hence, advances in tailoring the dispersion of single-mode fibers over the decades, especially with the advent of photonic crystal structures, has led to revolutionary advances in nonlinear optics.
