Abstract
The terahertz (THz) spectral window, generally considered to span from 0.3 to 10 THz, is nowadays crucial for plenty of applications, from homeland security to environmental monitoring or biomedicine. Recently, supercontinuum sources and Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCL) have contributed to make important steps towards some of these applications. However, the lack of a precise frequency scale and the low resolution, as in the case of supercontinuum sources, the need of cryogenic cooling and the small tunability of THz QCLs, have hampered precise spectroscopic measurements with room temperature set-ups in a broad range of the THz spectrum. A strategic alternative to these sources is Difference Frequency Generation (DFG) in nonlinear media.
