Near-stoichiometric LiTaO3 for deep UV electro-optical applications

Abstract

The electro-optic effect is widely used in scientific and technical applications for modulation, deflection or processing of optical signals. Since laser sources in the UV are becoming available, there is an increasing interest in such low wavelength applications. Using smaller wavelengts, a higher resolution can be achieved in applications like holographic interferometry or lithography. For volume holographic data storage, the storage density is increasing proportional to /.3 when going to smaller wavelengths. In photorefractive applications, using light with photon energy higher than the band gap of the material enables charges to be excited directly from one band to the other. This interband photorefraction leads to considerably faster response times compared to conventional photorefractive effect.
