Abstract

The Nd:YAl3(BO3)4 (Nd:YAB) crystal has been widely studied as self-frequency conversion laser crystal, due to its high nonlinear optical parameters, the high crystal quality and the possibility of incorporate high Nd3+ ion concentrations without quenching effects. The dispersion relations of YAB give rise to the possibility of generating the three fundamental colors (red, green and blue) in a single laser element operating in the 1.3 μm laser channel of Nd3+ [1]. In addition this crystal allows to obtain ultraviolet (UV) light by phase matching (PM) frequency conversion processes [2], in contrast to other non-linear laser crystals, such as LiNbO3.
