Dual layer digital versatile disk pickup integrating opto-electronic and diffractive elements

Abstract

Usage of digital versatile disks (DVD) is growing due to their larger storage capacity compared to CDs. On a single layer this increase is achieved by a higher track density, use of a shorter wavelength, tighter focusing and more sophisticated data compression techniques. The storage capacity can then be doubled by the presence of an additional information layer. Present pickup systems acquire information from dual layer DVDs by first focusing onto and reading the data from one layer. By varying the focus by either mechanical or other means the second layer is then accessed [1]. We present a design for a pickup that acquires data from both the layers simultaneously.
