Abstract

The dynamics of an optically induced space charge in photorefractive crystals is associated with excitation and damping of space charge waves when the product KLd ≫ 1. Here, K is the wave vector of the grating, and Ld is the drift length of carriers. The space charge waves can be regarded as new quasiparticles in solids («spastrons» or «photoreffactons» in accordance with terminology of different authors). They exhibit a very unusual form of the dispersion law ΩK ~ K−1, and they are of great interest for investigation of not only photorefractive materials but also a very broad spectrum of semiconductors.
