Abstract

Nonlinear periodic structures have been receiving increasing interest because of their potential application to optical signal processing, optical memory, optical logic gates and optical power limiting. Previously proposed devices rely on optical bistability. We have proposed all-optical limiters, switches, as well a complete set of logic gates, an analog-to-digital converter, and an all-optical subtractor that rely on the nonlinear, but stable response of periodic structures [1].
