Abstract

Implementing long repeaterless transmission at high bitrates on conventional single mode fibre (SMF) at 1.55µm may be a cost-effective network design. Dispersion compensation is necessary due to high dispersion, while distortion due to self phase modulation (SPM) must be cambatted since high input powers is necessary to achieve high power budget. In this paper we demonstrate numerically that the power budget may be increased considerable if the amount of pre- and post-compensation is optimized. Furthermore, our results shows that optimum modulation format depends on the selected compensation scheme.
