Abstract

A number of groups world-wide are investigating the use of two dimensional photonic crystals (2-D PC)1 to enhance the efficiency of solid state lasers and light emitting diodes. They hope to suppress the lateral emission of light by creating an in-plane photonic band gap (PBG). The performance of such structures will only be attractive if waveguiding is built into the designs. Previous work has shown that, in planar waveguides with a strong 1-D PC2, novel high-Q resonances occur. In this paper we present measurements of 2-D PC in planar waveguides and consider their relevance to non-linear frequency conversion in semiconductor waveguides.
