Frequency conversion in quasi-phasematching waveguides

Abstract

Quasi-phasematching (QPM) is a versatile technique for second-order nonlinear processes. A phase-velocity mismatch between the interacting waves are compensated for by a spatial modulation of the material's nonlinearity, which allows generation of arbitrary wavelengths within the transparency of the nonlinear material. This modulation is typically on the order of a few µms. With QPM it is also possible to use the strongest nonlinearity, d33, in crystals like LiNbO3, LiTaO3, and LTP.
