Abstract
Directional couplers are important components of integrated optoelectronic devices such as power splitters and combiners, switches, and polarization and wavelength (de)multiplexers. Some recent work on multimode waveguide couplers using widely-spaced access waveguides has demonstrated good performance;1 however, the use of wide couplers carriers the penalty of increased device length. This problem is particularly grievous in deeply-etched, strongly- confining rib waveguides, which are otherwise well-suited to small-dimension devices since small-radius waveguide bends can be employed.2
