Photon avalanche upconversion: an alternative model

Abstract

The avalanche upconversion process in rare-earth doped crystals has been dis covered few years ago1 and has attracted much interest. The effect is characterized by a sudden decrease in transmission above a certain intensity, and the rise time of upconverted fluorescence is intensity dependent.
