Transmission performance of 10 Gb/s prototype system using directly modulated laser and MUX/DEMUX

Abstract

Recently, high capacity long haul optical transmission has been a big topic in the industry due to the advances in data and video communication. Numerous studies and experiments have been conducted to achieve 10 Gb/s optical transmission,1–3 focusing on the transmission distance. There is also an increasing need for a low cost, short distance transmission suited for the metropolitan area network, and for intra-office applications. In order to meet this requirement, we designed a 10 Gb/s directly modulated laser transmitter/compact regenerator pair. We also included 8:1 multiplexer (MUX)/1:1 demultiplexer (DEMUX) with clock multiplier to investigate the penalty associated with the multiplexer output waveform distortion, which has been overlooked in the study often. The following shows the system architecture and transmission experiment results over 70 km of non dispersion shifted fiber, and system margin is investigated for robust operation.
