Abstract

The number of stations/nodes on an all-optical fibre data bus is limited by the total allowable system loss. Therefore, it is desirable to couple almost all the local transmitter power into the bus, and be able to remove only a small fraction of the light from the bus fibre. This can be achieved by using asymmetric singlemode/multimode couplers which are fabricated by fusing a singlemode fibre and a multimode fibre together. A linear data bus and nodal network architecture is shown in Fig. 1.
