Photonic band gap of a two-dimensional air-rod lattice studied by near-infrared transmission spectroscopy

Abstract

Recently, a gap1 in the density of photon states for periodic structure has attracted much interest. Up until now experimental results on such a gap in both three- and two-dimensional lattices have been restricted to the microwave regime. This is because fabrication of such a lattice with the gap at optical wavelength is extremely difficult since the gap energy in wavelength is of the order of the lattice constant.
