Abstract
Vertical-cavity surface-emitting lasers (VC-SELs) are very attractive and promising for application to optical interconnections. In fiber-based interconnections, a simple and efficient fiber coupling is required. Assistance of planar microoptics was proposed as an elegant solution,1 while high coupling efficiency was demonstrated in direct coupling owing to narrow beam divergence of the SEL.2 In this paper, we demonstrate a direct fiber coupling to a SEL with a backside guiding hole. By inserting a fiber to the hole, comparable coupling efficiency is obtained to the coupling to a lasing SEL.
