Abstract

The polarization direction of vertical-cavity surface-emitting-lasers (VCSELs) cannot be pre-determined because the gain medium of VCSEL is isotropic and two orthogonal polarization states are nearly degenerated.1 To stabilize polarization of VCSELs, we propose and demonstrate a novel scheme utilizing a fine metal-interlaced grating etched at the topmost layer of distributed Bragg reflector (DBR).
