Abstract
Periodically segmented channel waveguides (PSCW) in semiconductor were realized, for the first time, by the use of a continuous guiding layer but with a segmented ridge, cladding region. As shown in Fig. 1, GaAs guiding layer is sandwiched by two Al0.15Ga0.85As claddings. The upper cladding is a segmented ridge structure along the beam propagation direction, giving rise to effects of segmentation as well as horizontal confinement of the mode.
