Soliton self-frequency-shift of ultrashort pulses and its self-suppression by coherent saturation effects

Abstract

The first theoretical description of the RSFS was given by Gordon,1 who derived a frequency shift varying with the inverse fourth power of the pulse width. However, such dependence is derived under the assumption that the soliton pulse duration is larger than the optical phonon oscillation period TR = 80 fs. On the other hand, in a number of experiments on soliton transmission and amplification, pulses with durations as short as 20 fs have been observed.2 In this situation the conditions for the validity of the theoretical model in Ref. 1 are not fulfilled. In addition, at soliton intensities Ip> 1010 W/cm2 the effect of saturation of the Raman response of the medium may play a noticeable role.
