Amplitude and phase fluctuations in stimulated Brillouin scattering

Abstract

The stochastic initiation of stimulated Brillouin scattering (SBS) leads to amplitude and phase fluctuations in the Stokes beam.1–6 Phase fluctuations occur as a result of an abrupt change (phase jumps) or the gradual drift of the phase of the initiating radiation. Amplitude fluctuations occur as a result of either a change in the amplitude of the initiating radiation, or as a result of a phase jump. It is known that the amplitude fluctuations of the SBS Stokes wave are suppressed for high gains.3,4
