Abstract
The state-of-the-art in semiconductor diode lasers is advancing on several fronts. The use of new materials and new cavity geometries are providing more efficient and more capable devices. For example within the past year, visible lasers with wavelengths extending to the blue have been demonstrated; strained-layer quantum-wells have enabled devices with increased efficiency and power as well as expanded modulation bandwidth; miniature vertical-cavity structures, which may be much more manufacturable, are looking much more practical; and new widely tunable structures have been demonstrated.
