Abstract
We have recently demonstrated a high-finesse, electronically tunable liquid-crystal Fabry-Perot étalon filter for use in high-density wavelength-division-multiplexed (HD-WDM) communication systems.1,2 An electronic tunability of over 60 nm has been achieved with voltages in the range of 1-3 V applied to the filter. In our previous work, the use of unpatterned single-element electrodes restricted the filtering to a single wavelength. Here we demonstrate multiwavelength filtering with the use of multielement, patterned electrodes that allow us to apply several independent voltages to the liquid-crystal étalon. Multiwavelength filter is a key component in multiwavelength cross-connect switches and in WDM local access networks using subcarrier multiplexing.3
