Abstract
The temporal and spatial coherence of the diode laser-pumped Nd:YAG Miser,1,2 combined with its inherently strong resistance to external optical feedback, has promoted the use of this laser as a master oscillator in coherent Doppler radar3 and as an injection seeder for high power pulsed Nd:YAG systems. Until now no analogous single frequency Nd:glass laser has been demonstrated. Although operation of a miniature monolithic glass rod laser has verified the feasibility of efficient diode laser pumping of glass,4 spatial hole burning prevents single frequency operation in such conventional linear resonator designs by favoring the simultaneous oscillation of multiple axial modes.
