Enhanced photorefractive beam fanning due to sell-generated internal fields

Abstract

We report on a new effect which we observe in several photorefractive tungsten bronze crystals. These crystals, when cooled while exposed to laser light and subsequently warmed without exposure, display enhanced photorefractive beam fanning. In particular, the on-axis transmission of both ordinary and extraordinary polarized light is greatly reduced, the fanned light is greatly enhanced, and the response time is significantly shortened. These observations will be clearly demonstrated using videotape recordings.
