Performance characterization of erbium-doped optical fiber amplifiers

Abstract

In recent years there has been widespread interest in use of erbium-doped silica fibers for optical amplifier applications in long haul telecommunications links. To assess the ultimate limits of these systems, a detailed analysis of the gain and noise properties of a laboratory prototype (Fig. 1) has been carried out.
