Novel phenomena in two-wave mixing with Ce-SBN crystals

Abstract

Two- and four-wave mixing in SBN crystals have been investigated by many researchers for their use in holography and phase conjugate mirror image amplification. In our two-wave mixing experiments with Ce-SBN crystal and an He–Ne laser, it is found that when the angle included between two incident beams is ~16.2° (in air), first-order diffraction beams appear symmetrically on each side of the incident beams. The dependence of the diffraction efficiency on the angle between the incident beams is very steep. The maximum diffraction efficiency is ~5%. For each of the diffracted beams, one incident beam serves as both a writing beam and reading beam, and the other incident beam serves as a writing beam only.
