Abstract
Wavelength division multi/demultiplexing (WDM) of optical signals is important for increasing the transmission capacity and network flexibility of fiber transmission systems. There have been three major approaches to constructing WDM components: bulk optic, fiber optic, and integrated optic. Among them the integrated optic approach looks very attractive, if it allows low loss, fiber to waveguide coupling. The reason is sought in its potential productivity, device stability, and suitability for integration. Recent developments in integrated WDM components based on fiber compatible silica waveguides on Si substrates are reviewed.
