Abstract

In the field of ultrafast phenomena, it is important to continue to expand the range and versatility of femtosecond pulse sources to enable direct optical studies of a wider variety of material systems. Our approach to producing femtosecond pulses at different wavelengths is based on the high peak intensities (>1010 W/cm2) attainable at an intracavity focus of a CPM dye laser. At this level, 3-wave mixing in thin nonlinear crystals becomes reasonably efficient, and the 108 Hz repetition rate, coherence, beam spatial quality, and short pulsewidths are all preserved. As an example, we introduced a 108 Hz ultraviolet source based on intracavity frequency doubling of a CPM in B-BaB2O4 providing 3 mW of 43 fs pulses and 20 mW of ~100 fs pulses at 315 nm1.
