Abstract
Use of chromium Ions as codopant for rare-earth ions in the scandium garnets solved a number of problems in the physics of solid-state lasers. The main feature of such crystals is their extremely high absorption of pump power. A typical laser rod absorbs ~80% of the pump power by a single path. New crystals open new possibilities:
