Abstract
Extensive investigations of nonlinear optical effects of liquid crystals (LCs) have been recently conducted in the visible and near-IR spectral regions. Self-focusing (or defocusing) with the observation of associated diffraction patterns of the main or probe beam is sometimes used to detect the nonlinear behavior. However, inherent thermal effects can cause these results to be somewhat ambiguous. Differentiation between thermal effects and optical field-induced molecular reorientation of LCs is an interesting and important task.
