Abstract

Room temperature stimulated emission was achieved in Dy:YLF at 4.34 µm. This is the longest resonantly pumped rare earth laser wavelength reported to date. Emission was produced by resonant pumping with an Er:YLF laser at 1.73 µm. Room temperature stimulated emission was observed in Dy:YLF at 4.34 µm corresponding to the 6H11/2 to 6H13/2 transition. Trivalent dysprosium was previously laser by Johnson and Guggenheim.1 They obtained laser oscillation with Dy in BaY2F8 at 77 K. The 6H13/2 to 6H15/2 transition at 3.02 µm is the longest rare earth laser wavelength observed with flashlamp pumping.
