A chemical oxygen-iodine laser operates at pressures of a few torr. In such conditions, hyperfine and translation relaxation of atomic iodine play a very important role in oxygen-iodine laser kinetics. Estimates show that rates of translation and hyperfine relaxation of 2P1/2 are of the order of O2(1Δ)-I energy transfer rate. The oxygen mixture results in a lowering cross-relaxation coefficient and hole burning effects.
