Limit on beam healing by phase conjugation

Abstract

Phase conjugation is an important technique for the correction of phase distortions incurred upon propagation through a phase aberrating medium. Impressive experimental verifications of the healing of phase distortions have been demonstrated. However, limits to the restoration of any light beam to its original state (prior to aberration) arise naturally due to thermodynamics. These limits can result in considerable energy loss in the healing process.
