Abstract
In most digital laser communication systems, the bias current is kept close to the threshold, and automatic power control (APC) with slow time response is used.1 This kind of driving technique is not suitable for data burst transmission in a local area network for several reasons. First, the SNR at a receiving terminal in an optical star network is degraded by superimposing laser spontaneous emission generated at every terminal.
