Abstract
We have demonstrated a single-mode inline fiber variable attenuator. The attenuator consists of a birefringent polarization-preserving fiber which acts as a variable wave plate and a newly developed single-polarization fiber 1 acting as a polarizer. The attenuator is adjusted by changing the effective length of the polarization-preserving fiber with tension or temperature.
