Abstract
The photothermal effect constitutes the basis of a number of schemes to measure very small light absorptions. Examples include phase fluctuation optical heterodyne (PFLOH) detection1 and thermal lensing. The former has proven useful in sensitive trace-gas detection schemes2, 3 and has been shown to be competitive with photoacoustic detection. PFLOH detection monitors the refractive index change by placing the heated sample in a sensitive Machr-Zehnder interferometer employing a stable single frequency helium neon laser.
