Abstract
Gigabit rate and picosecond optical pulse trains have a potential application to time division multiplexing for optical communication and to other optical processing systems. Picosecond optical pulse generation using a laser diode has been demonstrated with active1 or passive2 mode-locking methods, where an external resonator is used. Simpler pulse generation is achieved by injection current modulation on a laser diode without the external resonator.3 This paper describes Gbit/sec optical pulse generation in a InGaAsP/InP DH laser by a sinusoidal injection current modulation and its gating by a LiNbO3 optical directional coupler with a traveling-wave electrode.
