Abstract
In periodically poled LiNbO3, first order quasi-phase-matching (QPM) allows nonlinear interactions between waves polarized along the z-axis, for which the largest nonlinear coefficient deff = 2d33 / π = 20.9 pm / V can be used, leading to 15 times larger conversion SHG efficiency per unit length compared to birefringent phase-matched interactions. The periodicity of the inverted ferroelectric domains must equal twice the coherence length of the nonlinear interaction. Fig. 1 shows the required period vs wavelength for SHG using d33.
