Abstract
The demonstration of long-length fiber gratings for dispersion compensation has brought UV-induced optical loss into view as a key issue for the realization of a suitable figure of merit for compensation over the entire erbium spectrum An understanding of the radiation induced effects in hydrogen and nonhydrogen doped optical fibers is required, and the effects of glass dopants on this loss needs to be studied.
