Abstract
Color centers in yttrium aluminum garnet have not been as heavily studied as in halides and some other oxides. The studies which have been done were usually undertaken from the perspective of minimizing defects and photo-induced absorption which can degrade the laser performance of Nd:YAG.(1-7) In the hope of developing broadly tunable visible and near-ultraviolet color center lasers in oxide crystal hosts including YAG, we have undertaken efforts to maximize rather than minimize certain defects and to explore their photoluminescence properties. In this paper we address a defect which absorbs at 370 nm and emits in a broad band at 400 nm in undoped (as well as Nd doped) YAG grown under a partial CO reducing atmosphere at the Shanghai Institute of Optics and Fine Mechanics. The photo luminescence was first observed in 1974 by one of the authors (G. Wu)(8) in crystals grown by the method to be described below.
