Abstract

The angular resolution of large ground-based telescopes is limited by local atmospheric seeing. If effects of atmospheric turbulence can somehow be compensated, one can achieve diffraction-limited imaging on ground. Steady progress has been made over the past two decades in adaptive optics technology which promises to provide real-time turbulence compensation.
